Benefits
of Local Honey - Rineyville Kentucky
- Our
honey is 100% natural and a product of our environment. Worker honey
bees collect nectar throughout Rineyville Kentucky from plants, trees, and
weeds, then transform the nectar that they gather into honey by adding
enzymes to the nectar and reducing the moisture. Much of the honey
bought in “big box” stores is imported from China, Argentina, India,
Bulgaria, Viet Nam, Canada, and other countries.
- As
bees travel from blossom to blossom in search of nectar, they brush against
the pollen-bearing parts of a flower (anther or stamen) and pick up pollen.
When the honey bee goes to another flower for more food, some of the pollen
from the first flower sticks to the second flower. In this way, the flowers
are pollinated. Almonds, apples, avocados, blueberries, cantaloupes,
cherries, cranberries, cucumbers, sunflowers, watermelon and many other
crops all benefit from honey bees for pollination. You can see how
honeybees provide both a product and a service to our area!
- Honey
contains bits and pieces of pollen, and as an immune system booster, it is
quite powerful. Allergies arise from continuous over-exposure to the
same allergens. Straight exposure to pollen often triggers allergies
but that exposure to pollen in the honey usually has the opposite effect.
In local honey the allergens are delivered in small, manageable doses
and the effect over time is very much like that from undergoing a whole
series of allergy immunology injections.
- Honey's
unique composition makes it an effective anti-microbial agent, useful for
treating minor burns and scrapes, and for aiding the treatment of sore
throats and other bacterial infections.
- Research
has shown that unlike most other sweeteners, honey contains small amounts of
a wide array of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants, including
niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium,
manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.
- Manufacturers
have used honey in everything from hand lotions and moisturizers to bar
soaps and bubble baths. One reason they use honey is for its wholesome,
all-natural image; more and more consumers are demanding cosmetics and
personal care products made from natural ingredients. In the case of honey,
however, image is just the beginning. First, honey is a humectant,
which means it attracts and retains moisture. This makes honey a natural fit
in a variety of moisturizing products including cleaners, creams, shampoos
and conditioners. Honey also acts as an anti-irritant, making it suitable
for sensitive skin and baby care products.
- When
substituting honey for granulated sugar in recipes, begin by substituting
honey for up to half of the sugar called for in the recipe. For baked
goods, make sure to reduce the oven temperature by 25°F to prevent
over-browning; reduce any liquid called for by 1/4 cup for each cup of honey
used and add 1/2 teaspoon baking soda for each cup of honey used.
Because of its high fructose content, honey has higher sweetening power than
sugar. This means you can use less honey than sugar to achieve the desired
sweetness.
